Do you have a special interest or some expert knowledge? Do you have any thoughts or opinions you would like to share? If so, starting a blog is a great way to share your expertise or experiences with the rest of the world.
What is a blog?
A blog (or weblog) is a type of website where you can write (post) your own thoughts and ideas (a bit like a diary or journal).
New posts to a blog are listed at the top so as visitors to your blog can easily see what’s new. Posts can include text and images and other media such as videos and they can also include links to other posts within your own blog or to the rest of the web.
Do you need any technical skills?
Although familiarity with the internet and some basic word processing skills are helpful if you are considering starting a blog, there are a number of blogging platforms which make writing and publishing content really easy. If you know how to type using a word processor, then you can write a blog.
What to blog about
Writing regular blog posts should be enjoyable, so choose a topic that you have a real passion for. It is hard to come up with fresh and engaging posts if you aren’t really interested in the topic or niche you are writing about and your readers will soon pick up on your lack of enthusiasm and commitment.
Some of the most popular topics for blogs include travel, food, personal/life experiences, making money, fitness, fashion, beauty, health and technology. If you plan to blog about any of these then check out the competition to see what you are up against and then try to find an angle or approach which will make your blog different. Alternatively, choose a topic which is a bit more niche and less blogged about.
Only start a blog if you like writing
If writing is not your thing then blogging probably isn’t for you. To create a successful and potentially profitable blog you need to be a keen and confident writer who can happily churn out blog posts which are enjoyable, entertaining, informative, helpful or inspiring to read. On the other hand, if you are considering starting a blog simply for friends and family, then writing a regular blog is the perfect opportunity to improve your writing skills and develop your creativity.
How often should you write a blog post?
To create a successful blog you need to be posting regularly. This could be one or more posts a day, a post every other day, a post once a week. Whatever frequency you choose, try to maintain it. By posting regularly you will not only attract new visitors, you will also have a better chance of keeping the readers that do start to follow your blog. Your blog post followers will only come back for more if they know they can rely on you for engaging, interesting and regular posts.
Get feedback from your blog visitors
Many blogs have a comment section where visitors can add their own comments about what you have written. Getting people to engage through a comment section is a great way of communicating and keeping in touch with your loyal followers and other like-minded people, wherever they are in the world.
